The Economic Effects on the Northeast-Midwest Region of Current and Potential National Defense Expenditures

The report describes the pattern of defense expenditures in the Northeast-Midwest region and identifies the direct and indirect effects which those expenditures have by industrial sector. In addition, the effects of spending are estimated for the three sub-regions comprised of the New England, Mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes States. The study also explores two alternative defense spending patterns: first, a pattern was tested which targeted spending to regions with higher than average unemployment concentrations; and, second, defense spending was compared with an equal amount of spending on public works projects. The study also examines the economic and employment impacts of a prototypical military base and its linked components.
