摘要

A new rural road improves mobility, communication, and levels of living, but it can also increase traffic accidents, transmit disease, and damage nearby farms and pastures. Such is the dual nature of development-desirable outcomes may have undesirable side-effects. This report, the first of two volumes, outlines the environmental and health impacts that can occur in development in the Sahel and suggests measures to limit their effect. Rainfed and irrigated agriculture can increase population density and the concentration of toxic substances in soil, plants, and human tissue and can cause a dramatic rise in the incidence of waterborne diseases (E.G., schistosomiasis, malaria) and communicable diseases.
