A conference on Health Education and the Black Community was held at the Bureau of Health Education. During the conference position papers were offered on the relevance of health education theories and their application to the black community, the impact of health education on black communities without changes in the external environment, the role of the health education process in improving the health status and quality of life in the black community, methodological and substantive issues in health education programming, school health education in black communities, health promotion among black populations, perspectives on health education and health promotion in the black belt, competencies needed by health education personnel engaged in service to black communities, a categorical approach to comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention aimed at management of hypertension, prerequisites for health education in the black community, and health career development. Appendices include a participant roster, a list of issue that participants considered to need attention, and the agenda to the conference.
