These proceedings contain 21 papers which focus on three areas: mechanisms and kinetics of growth from various substrates; control, simulation, and optimization of microbial processes; and fundamentals of microbial processes. The conference was part of a continuous activity of a project to increase cooperation between the United States and the USSR on problems related to microbial processes. The presentations reflect areas of continuing cooperation on problems such as mechanisms and kinetics of hydrocarbon utilization, computer monitoring and control of fermentation, and utilization of cellulosic residues for protein production. In addition, new approaches to fermentation and recovery of microorganisms are addressed.
