Policy Analysis of Reservoir Operation in the Potomac River Basin. Volume II. Limits of the Washington Metropolitan Water Supply System

The focus of the volume is on mathematical programming models and their use in generating information about important tradeoffs in water allocation. The study examined the limits of the water supply system serving the Washington (D.C.) Metropolitan Area (WMA), and the potential yield of each individual reservoir that contributes to WMA's water supply was investigated. The theoretical limit of conjunctive operation of all reservoirs in meetings constant demand was determined using a Hypothetical Reservoir Operation procedure, while practical yield of that system was determined by an Optimal Integration Procedure. Monthly demand functions were incorporated with constraints reflecting current and future conditions.
