Health Consultation: Gary Development Landfill, Gary, Lake County, Indiana, August 8, 2012

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) evaluated the possible health impact of exposure to contaminants originating from Gary Development Landfill (GDL), because it was recently proposed (March 2011) for the Environmental Protection Agencys (EPAs) National Priorities List (NPL). ATSDR staff conducted a site scoping visit on July 22, 2011, with the U.S. EPA, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), and the City of Gary. ATSDR reviewed information on the wastes received by GDL, the limited onsite sampling data, summary information from surrounding contaminated areas, and sediment and fish data for the Grand Calumet River. This consultation summarizes the findings of ATSDRs evaluation.
