Mobile Home Research: Full-Scale Fire Tests on Specific Wall and Ceiling Materials of Mobile Home Modules

The research report presents the results of a series of modified full-scale fire tests that were conducted on mobile home modules constructed with various interior finish materials. The report was designed to provide HUD with comprehensive data on the characeristics of fire growth and spread that could be compared with other information on full-size mobile home tests. The evaluations were based on the burning characteristics of the materials when exposed to a fire resulting from the ignition of a 6.4 kg (14-lb) wood crib in a corner configuration. A review of the burning characteristics and analysis of the products of combustion under this set of test conditions found that the fire safety performance was most favorable in the case of the module constructed with 5.16-inch gypsum board, printed paper overlay (F.S. of 15) walls and ceiling. In addition, both types of 5/32-inch Lauan plywood wall materials (prefinished, intumescent coated and standard coated) showed no significant differences in ignitability and both contributed to fire growth.
