Significance of Masked PSP Toxins in Shellfish and Prediction of Usable Bering Sea Clam Beds by Cyst Mapping

The project evaluated the significance of recently identified masked PSP toxins in shellfish. Six new protogonyaulax neurotoxins were isolated and identified. It was found that the present AOAC bioassay for PSP does not adequately assay for total potential toxicity when N-sulfocarbamoyl toxins are present. Research was confined to Bristol Bay. Shellfish toxicity and resting cyst concentration were very low. This low density indicated that cyst mapping would not be a viable management tool in Bristol Bay.
