Microbial Mutagenesis Testing of Substances; Compound Report: F76-015, Papain (African Papaya)

SRI International examined an FDA compound identified as F76-015. The compound was tested in the Ames Salmonella/microsome assay for induction of reverse mutation in Salmonella typhimurium strains and in Escherichia coli WP2 (uvrA). Each assay was performed in the presence and in the absence of a rat liver homogenate metabolic activation system. In one of two assays with TA1537, toxicity was observed at the highest dose tested, 10,000 micrograms/plate. Because of histidine interference with the test results, it cannot definitely be concluded whether Compound F76-061 is a mutagen or nonmutagen in the Ames Salmonella/microsome assay.
