Diabetic Retinopathy Study Selected Study Forms

The Diabetic Retinopathy Study (DRS) was a multicenter clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of photocoagulation, (argon laser and xenon arc) in the treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathy. This randomized, controlled study involved 1,758 patients enrolled at 15 medical centers. Photocoagulation with either argon laser or xenon arc, as used in the study, was found to be effective in reducing the risk of severe visual loss and in inhibiting the progression of retinopathy. These effects were apparent in all stages of diabetic retinopathy studyied: proliferative, severe nonproliferative, and background. Also found were some deleterious effects of treatment, namely small losses of visual acuity and construction of the peripheral visual field.
