Automatic Fare Collection Equipment, Reliability and MaintainabilityAssessment Plan for Urban Rail Transit Properties

The report presents a generalized survey methodology for conducting assessments of automatic fare colletion (AFC) equipment performance and improvement programs in urban rail transit systems, namely, at the Bay Area Transit Authority (BART) District and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). Failure data collection and analysis efforts conducted by WMATA were studied in detail to determine their use for application to BART. The overall purpose of these activities was to acquire a basis for developing a general survey and analysis methodology that would establish some standardized procedures for collecting AFC equipment performance data. An AFC survey at BART was conducted to demonstrate elements of the methodology and to redefine its overall design.
