Neighbor Helping Neighbor Volunteer Program: A Manual for Training and Program Replication

This training manual provides guidelines for the implementation of a Neighbor Helping Neighbor Volunteer Program which provides older people with the information and training needed to help others as well as themselves maintain health and independence. The program capitalizes on existing natural helping networks, expanding their helping to target those who may be older or in need of special services and to provide them with information and assistance in obtaining these services. This manual is designed for administrators and direct service providers from senior and retirement centers, elderly housing complexes, home health care agencies, area agencies, volunteer agencies, etc. The first part of the manual describes the evolution of a specific program implemented in two Seattle Housing Authority highrise apartment buildings for the elderly. The remainder of the manual provides the reader with guidelines and materials for volunteer training and program replication.
