This report is a brief summary of a conference that had two main purposes: (1) To delineate future research that could be helpful in increasing the effectiveness of health promoting activities in the mass media, or in decreasing health damaging messages; (2) To suggest additional activities and lines of inquiry that the Institute of Medicine and other appropriate organizations might pursue in this area. Topics covered include health issues on commercial television, alcohol advertising, and violence on television.
