The proceedings of a workshop on respiratory control in diving are presented. The workshop was sponsored by the Undersea Medical Society and held in Madison, Wisconsin on September 18 to 20, 1980. Papers dealing with such topics as incidence and potential causes of impairment of consciousness in diving, specific causes of unconsciousness, hypoglycemia, cardiovascular aspects of in/water blackout, chemical factors in the regulation of breathing, mechanical factors in the control of breathing, mechanisms of ventilatory control during exercise, thermal effects on consciousness, respiratory anomalies among divers, an introduction to evaluation of ventilatory control, measuring the dive to breathe, assessing ventilatory sensitivity to carbon-dioxide and hypoxia, exercise in evaluation of respiratory control, shallow water blackout at a thousand feet, lessons from breath/held diving, respiratory problems during exercise at 47 and 66 atmospheres, obstacles to gas exchange in a dense environment, respiratory effects of breathing dense gas, static lung loading and other immersion effects, findings in prone versus head/out immersion, unconsciousness in oxygen diving, and behavioral toxicology of carbon-dioxide are presented.
