Federal Agencies Negligent in Collecting Debts Arising from Audits

Despite Federal laws and regulations, as well as congressional hearings and other GAO reports on debt collection problems in recent years, Federal agencies still have not developed adequate systems to properly settle audit-related debts. GAO found that Federal agencies have (1) ineffective collection systems, (2) poor management practices, and (3) little assurance that amounts collected are not in fact Government money. GAO makes specific recommendations for improving agencies' collection systems.
