National STI (Science, Technology and National Development) System of Egypt

Results are presented of a study of the proposed design of a national system of scientific and technical information (STI) services in Egypt. It is concluded that the design, implementation, and manpower development plans are sound and are compatible with the Egyptian environment. It is suggested that the proposed information resources and services system be an open-ended network of six nodes devoted to particular technical areas, that an active clientele development program be initiated, and that a document delivery service be offered. The proposed crash training program for professional and paraprofessional information specialists is said to be the most cost-effective approach in manpower development. The need for a strong central project directorate in the management and governance area is emphasized. It is recommended that the detailed design and implementation phase, scheduled to take three years, begin immediately.
