Apheresis for the Treatment of Goodpasture's Syndrome and Membranous Proliferative Glomerulonephritides

This assessment will focus on apheresis for the treatment of Goodpasture's syndrome and membranous proliferative glomerulonephritides. Although prospective, randomized, controlled trials have not been done, it appears that in GS where the patient is anuric and the renal biopsy suggests irreversible destruction of glomerular architecture, intensive plasma exchange and immunosuppression may only be worthwhile to control lung hemorrhage. In patients who have some degree of renal function on presentation, the results of plasma exchange are good, but the results are related to the severity of clinical and histological parameters. For life-threatening forms of GS, plasma exchange should be considered standard therapy.
