Location and Design of Safe and Convenient Park and Ride Lots

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) operates more than 200 owned or joint-use lots. In 1982, Caltrans conducted a questionnaire survey at 37 park-and-ride lots of both types throughout the state. Results of this study and subsequent research confirm previous reports showing that park-and-ride lots constructed along major highways in commuting corridors are well patronized and make a substantial contribution to saving vehicle-miles and related travel costs. Available data indicate that highest priority should be given to constructing lots more than 20 miles from major employment centers for ridesharing programs, and more than 10 miles from such centers for transit stops. Where possible, lots should be paved, clearly marked, landscaped, lighted, provided, with passenger shelters, bike lockers, and public telephones, maintained in a clean condition, and be easily accessible and visible from roads interchanging with the major commuter highway.
