Classical examples of visual shape ambiguity can be seen as the result of a rivalry between two interpretations. Preference judgments about unambiguous patterns have similarly been explained in terms of a rivalry between the preferred and a second-best interpretation. The study questions whether the unpreferred second-best interpretation corresponds to a suppressed but concurrently present interpretation, or merely reflects an alternative view which happens to be preferred less often. It describes the outcome of presenting a sequence of two patterns immediately following each other with a very short onset asynchrony: one complete pattern and one out of three possible subpatterns of it.
