Relationship of Benkelman Beam Deflection as Measured by Florida Method to Those Measured by AASHTO Method T-256-77, P-13-79

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has been using a procedure to measure pavement deflection since 1962 and a history of performance versus deflection has been obtained. The FDOT procedure differs from AASHTO-256-77 which is used by many other States. A field test was set up to determine the relationship between the two test methods. The test results indicate that data obtained with both methods correlated with reasonable accuracy. It is recommended that Florida continue to use its test method but to consider certain modifications in the equipment used for loading.
