Design sensitivity analyses are presented with general boundary conditions for static response problems and for linear dynamic problems. Difficulties in treating equivalent functional constraints for the point-wise state variable constraints are noted, and ideas for handling such constraints are suggested. An optimization of general response problems is provided, with the worst-case design formulation and the hybrid formulation for the point-wise state variable constraints. The treatment of point-wise state variable constraints in distributed parameter problems is discussed. It is concluded that the worse-case design formulation works well as precise optimum designs are obtained and the new hybrid formulation works efficiently, converging to either optimal or near optimal solutions without any difficulty. A literature review is included.
