Improved Ion Detection for a Portable Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer System

The purpose of the project was to determine the technical and economic feasibility of designing and manufacturing an electro-optical ion detector (EOID) for use with a terrestrial, commercial version of the NASA-developed Mars Lander micro-gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS). Test of a breadboard system with an EOID was completed successfully. Technical performance and construction characteristics of an EOID, and an associated micro-GC/MS were derived and are described. Results confirm that an EOID can be developed and successfully incorporated into a micro-GC/MS at a competitive price.
