Myringotomy/Tympanostomy Tubes for Otitis Media

The purpose of the study was to compare the efficacy of myringotomy alone (M) and myringotomy with tympanostomy tube insertion (M and T) in relation to a control group undergoing no surgery (NS) in children with chronic otitis media with effusian (OME). One hundred nine children between the ages of 7 months and 12 years with chronic OME of at least two months' duration, unresponsive to therapy with antimicrobials and antihistamine-decongestant entered the M and T-I trial. The patients were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: (1) NS; (2) M; (3) M and T. Those children with 'significant' and/or symptoms despite medical therapy such as otalgia or vertigo were assigned only to the surgical options.
