摘要

World tea production in 1983 is estimated to have approximated a record 1.97 million tons, up 3% from a year earlier. Continued strong demand in several major producting countries and in the Middle-East resulted in world consumption again exceeding production, following several years of similar estimated stock reductions. World tea prices rose to record levels in late 1983 and into early 1984, reflecting the tight supply situation. A small harvest in Sri Lanka and the Indian Govt's temporary ban on exports of cut-tear-curl type teas also added to the sharp rise in tea prices. U.S. imports of tea in 1983 fell 7% to 77,318 tons; however, because of higher prices, the value rose by 2% to $131.4 million.
