The overall objective of this report is to examine alternate modes of stimulation in Devonian shale wells and develop methods to assess the efficacy of stimulation by conventional hydraulic fracturing techniques and High Energy Gas Fracturing Techniques. This study provides the first rigorous and quantitative perspective on stimulating Devonian shale wells by wellbore enlarging techniques such as explosive stimulation and hydraulic fracturing. The performance of hydraulically fractured wells in Devonian shale reservoirs is discussed. A new type curve to determine fracture half-length following hydraulic fracturing is presented. This type curve provides a simple graphical approach to analyze the performance of vertically fractured wells in Devonian shales. Conditions required to ensure that well tests are successful are specified. Preliminary assessment of the performance of wells following high energy gas fracturing techniques (multiple fractures) is presented. Procedures to model stimulated wells in naturally fractured reservoirs are discussed.
