The conversion of maf coal to pyridine solubles and gas was investigated in a microautoclave batch reactor for 2 KY washed coal samples (KY No.9 and No.11). Solvent hydrogen donor strength was controlled by varying the tetralin content of a mixed 1-methyl naphthalene-tetralin solvent. Primary liquefaction conversions greater than 90% in 10 min. of reaction time at 427 C were achieved in liquefaction solvents with moderate hydrogen-donor strength (circa 40% tetralin). A modified irreversible first order rate expression, containing a parameter (alpha) to account for the intrinsic reactives of the maf coal, described the experimental kinetic data rather well.
