Education for Research in Library and Information Science - A Basis for Policy Analysis in the Nordic Countries

The evolution from librarianship to library and information science (LIS) is briefly outlined, showing a powerful trend towards a new conceptual framework for information provision and processing. Against this background, the Nordic library school system is reviewed, with emphasis on efforts to go beyond vocational training programs into higher education and research. Recognizing the strong interrelationship between analytical reviews for policy decisions, R and D work, and education for research, the LIS research situation in Sweden is described as an example of a general complex pattern. The numerous Swedish attempts to design control mechanisms for a coordinated national LIS program and to institutionalize education for research in LIS are presented. In conclusion, it is suggested that the thrust of development lies in the information science (IS) end of the LIS spectrum.
