Evaluation of Several Mineral Fillers for Use in Item 340 Hot-Mix Asphaltic Concrete

The characteristics of mineral filler materials have been investigated to determine their potential in upgrading the performance of asphaltic concrete, especially by increasing hot-mix stability and durability to alleviate problems with rutting and shoving. Three phases of testing were conducted. These included (1) testing of mineral fillers alone, (2) testing asphalt cements, and (3) testing of mastics composed of mineral filler and asphalt cements.
