摘要

Insects, fungi, and birds cause defects in hardwoods that seriously degrade lumber cut from infested trees. Mills, burdened with an abundance of lowgrade hardwoods, need a profitable outlet for this defective lumber. Much of this downgraded lumber could be used to manufacture decorative products such as paneling, selected furniture pieces, cabinets, picture frames, and attractive items. Wormy chestnut and pecky cypress have been readily accepted as character-marked woods and are currently in demand. Landowners, timber buyers, loggers, and mill personnel could be trained to recognize standing timber, logs, and lumber with character-marked values. Hardwood manufacturers need to recognize the opportunities for making use of these defects.
