摘要

The report analyzes the relationship of health status to the use of and expenditures for health care services for persons under and over 65 years of age. The services discussed are hospital care, physician and other ambulatory medical services, and emergency room services. Utilization and expenditure patterns are differentiated by types of insurance coverage. Among the salient findings are: Among persons under 65, about 75 percent had private insurance, 9 percent had medicaid, 13 percent were uninsured, and less than 2 percent had medicare. About 8 percent of these persons were uninsured for the entire year and about 21 percent were insured at some period during the year. Among those 65 years or older, 96 percent had Medicare and about 12 percent had Medicare and Medicaid. In both age groups, persons with Medicaid tended to have the poorest health status, used more services, and incurred higher charges than other groups. Uninsured persons under 65 used fewer services and incurred lower charges than those with insurance coverage.
