Fort Washington, with its high masonry walls, gun positions, dry moat, and drawbridge, is an excellent example of early nineteenth-century coastal defense. The structure represents the military philosophy held during the early days of the nation. Fort Washington was only one in a chain of forts built from Maine to Louisiana. The report is an analysis of the use and furnishings of several buildings at Fort Washington from 1840 through 1872: gatehouse, officers' quarters, enlisted men's barracks, and a casemate; it also covers the flagstaff and the fort's ordinance during the same period.
