New Sensor Offers 'Window' into Kraft Pulping Process

A new type of cooking liquor analyzer has been developed that can offer pulp makers a 'window' into data never before possible from their pulping process. According to the developers, the new analyzer can monitor organic and inorganic substances in the cooking liquor. The analyzer separates the sample into two fractions therefore preventing the interference of liquor components with the physical properties of the cooking liquor. This basic idea makes it possible to monitor pure dissolved lignin, degradation of wood polysaccharides and concentration/consumption of SO/sulfite within about five minutes. Two mill trials have been successfully conducted using the analyzer with both batch and continuous digesters.
