Tulsa International Trade Development Strategy

The purpose of the project was to identify ways for increasing export activity and foreign investment, particularly in the Tulsa area. The report notes that nationally only about half of all potential exporters actually compete in the international marketplace. Common concerns and needs of both small volume exporters and non-exporters with potential include marketing information such as probable demand for a product, distribution channels and best entry techniques as well as general information on procedures for exporting such as documentation, payment procedures and insurance. To provide this information for local businesses, the report recommends the establishment of a university centered export management assistance program to help firms start exporting and of an independent nonprofit export trading company. In addition to describing these programs in detail, the report provides guidelines for focusing on selected markets and integrating trade development with other economic development activities. Although much of the economic data in the report is specific to the Tulsa area, other communities interested in stimulating exports of local products and in attracting foreign investment may find the programs and project methodology useful.
