The study determines the efficiency of the methane anaerobic digestion treatment on rum distillery effluents and its capacity to change population of potentially pathogenic bacteria. It was concluded that methane anaerobic digestion treatment fails to significantly reduce BOD and COD levels in rum distillery effluents in terms of its effect on the environment, and there is no difference in treated and untreated effluents in terms of growth and survival of potentially pathogenic bacteria. Methane digestion treatment alone was shown to be insufficient in reducing the potential hazard of rum distillery effluents to the environment and/or public health.
