摘要

The 1978 report by the Committee on Nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics reviews industrial uses of modified food starches (MFS), MFS digestibility, bioavailability of other nutrients in diets containing MFS, the toxicity of MFS and modifiers, and current usage levels. All aspects of the review focused on the use of MFS in infant foods and the safety of consumption by infants. The committee concluded that, based on available data: 1. From a technical viewpoint, use of MSF in infant food is justified; 2. Except in infants under 3 months, there were no clinical problems with digestibility at use levels then current; 3. There was no evidence that MSF interfered with trace mineral availability; 4. There were no apparent toxicity concerns at use levels then current, except that propyleneoxide and epichlorohydrin treated products should not be used without further safety testing; 5. Use levels then current represented 'good manufacturing practice; and 6. All components added to infant food should be periodically reviewed for safety.
