Pesticide and Synthetic Organic Compound Survey: Report to the Iowa General Assembly on the Results of the Water System Monitoring Required by House File 2303

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources conducted a one-time finished water testing program of public water supplies (PWSs). 853 PWSs were tested for 35 pesticides and 35 synthetic organic compounds (SOCs). The testing was conducted from November 1986 to November 1987. 122 tested positive for one or more pesticides. 548 tested positive for one or more SOCs. 9 systems had confirmed pesticide or SOC levels that exceeded USEPA Health Advisory Levels. The most commonly found SOCs belong to a group of compounds called trihalomethanes.
