Study of Flow-Induced Vibrations of a Sieve Tray Column

The characteristics of flow-induced vibrations of a sieve tray column have been experimentally studied using a full-scale practical model of an actual absorption tower. The measured acceleration of the tray had a peak at about the designed gas velocity, and where the measured stress showed that these vibrations might cause significant damage to the structures of the tray column. A practical method of avoiding this type of vibration has been developed and the validity of the method has been confirmed in a full-scale model experiment. The excitation mechanism and the onset of this type of vibration has been experimentally studied using a small-sized model. The characteristics of the pressure pulsation of the air chamber have been investigated. It was found that the tray vibrations under consideration are self-excited vibrations resulting from an interaction of the tray vibrations and the bubble formation on the sieve tray. Criteria for predicting the onset of such instabilities are proposed in a similar form to those for fluid-elastic vibrations of tube bundles. (Copyright (c) 1988.)
