This report was prepared by an evaluation team which assesed the manufacturing technology displayed at the Hanover Trade Fair in April 1989. The trade fair evaluation (described in Part II of this study) was supplemented by a short study visit to government, associations, and research centers in Cologne, Bonn, and Aachen. Part I describes the benefits of monitoring international manufacturing technologies, investigates methods of cooperation, and provides details of visits to AIF, the Ministry of Research and Technology and Ministry of Economics, and the Fraunhofer Institute in Aachen. General information concerning the Hanover Fair is presented along with the perceived technical highlights by the evaluation team. This work provides recommendations for industry/government/university cooperation, and describes the cultural differences demonstrated in the German stategy of continuous incremental improvement rather than concentration on breakthrough technologies.
