摘要

The study analyzes copper consumption trends in developing countries. Its purpose is to clarify the determinants of these trends and provide a better understanding about likely future developments. Inter-country analysis provides only very limited support for the intensity-of-use hypothesis. Very large differences in the intensity of use found among countries and in individual countries at different times suggest that shifting macroeconomic performance and policy thrust are of importance in shaping copper consumption trends. Detailed studies of Brazil and India underline the significance of such factors as investment performance, trade restrictions, and other pricing policies (particularly those affecting domestic copper prices) in determining the levels of and changes in copper consumption. They also point to the large differences between countries in the circumstances that determine copper use; and consequently to the dangers of generalizing the findings from some countries to others.
