Can Family Planning Programs Serve the Reproductive Health Needs of SpecialGroups of High Risk Women

The paper is the final report of an operations research project to prevent thespread of HIV infection among registered prostitutes in Callao, the port suburb of Lima, Peru. The project was conducted by the San Marcos University Institute of Tropical Medicine with support from The Population Council, INOPAL project. The objectives of the project were (1) to protect registered prostitutes from HIV infection; (2) to reduce the prevalence of STD infection in the target population; (3) to increase condom use; (4) to increase knowledge about AIDS; (5) to improve quality of contraceptive use; and, (6) to provide gynecological services, including prompt treatment of genital ulcers and cancer testing. The project included educational activities, a reproductive health service, and free condom distribution.
