Technology Gateway Organization: A Mechanism for the Promotion of Technological Development and Industrial Competitiveness for Developing Countries

The global technological and business environment is undergoing drastic changes that have serious implications for developing countries. Rapid advances in technology are changing the patterns of manufacturing and competition. The paper has attempted to provide an initial case for a new organizational mechanism to promote technology development in developing countries. It draws upon the experiences of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) mission in Tunisia and attempts to outline the basic criteria and design requirements for gateway organizations, and their implications for the type of support that AID and other donor agencies can provide.
