The report presents estimates from the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey (NMES) of private and public health insurance coverage of American Indians and Alaska Natives eligible for services provided or supported by the Indian Health Service (IHS) and living on or near reservations. Data from the first round of the Survey of American Indians and Alaska Natives (SAIAN) show that 45 percent had health insurance in addition to IHS coverage, including 28 percent with private insurance and 16.9 percent with public coverage.
