A new numerical approach has been developed to solve the time dependent multi-group diffusion equation using variational-modal expansion method. In this method the neutron flux is expanded in series with the time part in the form of an exponential which is derived from the solution of space-time diffusion equations by iterative techniques. For the space part the variational approach is used to get an appropriate functional and by integration over the spatial co-ordinates, a set of algebraic equations are derived from which the solution could be obtained. A sample problem in one-dimensional slab geometry has proved the efficiency of the method. (ERA citation 10:030807)
