Spallation reactions. (Reactions de spallation)

Spallation reactions dominate the interactions of hadrons with nuclei in the GeV range (from (approx) 0.1 to (approx) 10 GeV). They correspond to a sometimes important ejection of light particles leaving most of the time a residue of mass commensurate with the target mass. The main features of the experimental data are briefly reviewed. The most successful theoretical model, namely the intranuclear cascade + evaporation model, is presented. Its physical content, results and possible improvements are critically discussed. Alternative approaches are shortly reviewed. (author). 84 refs. (Atomindex citation 28:069785)
