For the determination of aromatic content in high boiling mineral oils for tarification purposes three standardized methods, based on elution chromatography (ASTM-D 2549, GUD, DIN 51 384) have been evaluated on a range of industrial products. Special emphasis has been given in this context to reproducibility and repeatability criteria. From the experimental values obtained in this investigation it can be concluded that in general the three methods tend to yield reproducible results. With regard to standard deviation and confidence limits, the best results have consistently been obtained with the DIN method. Taking into account other advantages of that method, preference is given to the DIN method and it is suggested to make this method available as a European Norm (EN). In addition, the feasibility of applying some other techniques, such as IR- or UV-spectrophotometry, high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) or nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR) to the determination of aromatic content in petroleum products has been briefly investigated. Of these various techniques, only HPLC and NMR methods were found to be of practical interest. (Atomindex citation 10:422883)
