Computer Compatible Display Devices: A Study of Optimalized Devices with Static and Moving Targets

Five devices, used to communicate with a computer controlled display, were compared. A task was used in which such a device captures a succession of targets on a display. The task enabled the time per target to be an adequate measure of both speed and accuracy. Preliminary studies validated the task and found the best ratios of movement of a device to movement of a cursor on the screen for such devices as rolling balls and joysticks. The final study used optimalized situations with targets which were either stationary or which moved at one of two speeds. In order to provide a general evaluation schema, the objective speed measures are listed with a number of more subjective evaluations. No single device is found to be perfect, but the light pen is the fastest device and it is unaffected by target size and speed.
