An Image Processing Method for Position Estimation: A Maximum Likelihood Approach

A method which uses image information when updating a fully automated navigational system was studied. The method was tested using LANDSAT images. Well defined contours are found for each scan. Estimated contours are compared with prestored contours. The position estimate is the maximum likelihood estimate of the contour coordinates. For test data with a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 3, a very distinct estimate is obtained. For SNR = 0.65 a correct, but less distinct, minimum is obtained, which can be improved by using the correlation properties of the image.
