A correlation algorithm was developed as a method for digital image processing. The algorithm transforms the image area elements to be correlated, minimizing gray value differences by the least squares method. The transformation parameters are directly determined by the adjustment. The flexibility of the algorithm allows the recognition and compensation of distortions. The algorithm provides a criterion for the quality of the correlation and for the remaining disturbances. The empirical results are confirmed by theoretical studies. For the transmission of points in aerial pictures a precision of 1 micron is obtained. The accuracy of the correlation is affected by long-wavelength perturbations. The results are also affected by perturbations in the data sets of the digitized images.
