摘要

Attention is drawn to the differences between the numerous reduction formulae used by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) members for converting the surface pressure measured at observing stations considerably above sea level (500 m or more) to mean sea level pressure. No particular method so far has been recommended by the WMO, but certain steps towards standardization of conversion methods are apparently needed. Some progress has already taken place in this regard. The Extraordinary Session of the WMO Commission for Basic System in its meeting from 21 October to 1 November 1985 in Hamburg agreed that urgent action was necessary to standardize the procedure for pressure reduction. The Commission decided to refer this task to a group of experts to develop a proposal for the solution of this problem. The differences between the reduction formulae used by various countries is studied in some detail.
