Electrochemical and spectroscopic investigations were performed on semiconducting rutile electrodes, in contact with an aqueous electrolyte, in order to characterize TiO2, modified by ion implantation with different materials. Spectrophotometric measurements reveal the modification of the absorption characteristics of rutile due to ion implantation. Electrochemical measurements show that the photoelectrochemical behavior of the samples is determined by the implantation parameters dose, mass, and penetration depth. The reducing effect of ion implantation of TiO2 is due to radiation damage. The quantum efficiency versus implanted dose shows a maximum, verified by model calculations. The quantum efficiency of homogeneously reduced TiO2 samples decreases significantly after implantation.
